A Broken Gift
Gifts say a whole lot more about the giver than they do the people we give them to. It shows what you think about someone, how you value them and what you know about them.
Everybody loves a gift, but what if that gift is broken? And what if that gift was intentionally given knowing it was broken? That would speak loudly of what kind of friend you have, one that would give you a broken gift!
The bible says in Malachi 1:8 (NLT) "When you give blind animals as sacrifices, isn’t that wrong? And isn’t it wrong to offer animals that are crippled and diseased? Try giving gifts like that to your governor, and see how pleased he is!” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies."
God's people were giving the animals that were diseased (broken) as a token of their love and affection. This revealed how they valued God. They were not bringing their best to God.
The comparison God makes is, we know we would never give an important person (governor) a broken gift, so why on earth would we think so little of the God who created all people!
All people matter to God so they should matter to us. How we treat them and serve them reveals what we think about them. People deserve our best. And the ones that mean the most deserve the most attention, the most support and the most affection. God gave us His best - Jesus. This is why we know how much God loves us.
Half hearted devotion is like giving a broken gift.
